BiographyBuilt to last, not to trend.

Los Angeles-based composer moving through gospel, smooth jazz, R&B, and soul — not as genres to master, but as languages to tell the truth in. Self-taught since the mid-1980s with a keyboard, a drum machine, and a four-track.

James Brown portrait

01 — Introduction

Heartfelt, instrumental, story-first

James Brown is a Los Angeles-based composer, instrumentalist, and independent recording artist whose work spans gospel, smooth jazz, R&B, and soul. Self-taught since the mid-1980s — starting with nothing more than a keyboard, a drum machine, and a four-track tape recorder — he built a musical voice from instinct rather than formal training.

Across three albums released between 2010 and 2024, his music has taken shape as a form of storytelling: faith-driven, deeply personal, and built to hold up over repeated listens rather than chase a passing trend. Each composition is less about display and more about dwelling — creating space for reflection, gratitude, and quiet lift.

Midwest born • LA raised • Motown thread

Born in the Midwest.
Raised in Los Angeles.

Grew up on soul and funk — Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations — long before touching an instrument. Music wasn't his first calling, but over time it became the way he made sense of life.

The sound before the instrument

Absorbing phrasing and feel before theory. Soul and funk records as teachers.

Reunion with his cousin, Donny McCullough

His cousin, Donny McCullough — a producer who once worked with Berry Gordy at Motown. Conversations about songcraft, legacy, and what it means to make something that lasts pushed him back to the keys.

Late 2000s → 2010

First original Gospel song → Endless Summer Breeze

That first Gospel release marked the start of the path that would lead to three albums, three chapters, one thread.

Music is a blessing before it's anything else.

For James, music is a gift meant to be shared honestly, not perfected for its own sake. He writes and records from a place of gratitude, with the hope that what he makes brings a little peace, comfort, or lift to whoever's listening. No chasing. No posturing. Just the work, offered as is.
